Just late last week I stumbled upon such unfortunate news (well, it’s kinda old now actually) of Hillman Curtis’s untimely death.
Hillman Curtis was all sorts of awesomeness. He was a web designer, writer, and–most importantly–a filmmaker, documenting the poetics of famous (and sometimes infamous) graphic designers through his Artist Series. Curtis passed away last 18 April 2012.
The quiet filmmaker was responsible for my introduction to the graphic design world. No, we never met. It was through Ali Figueroa who showed us the videos of Hillman Curtis (the Artist Series). Through the vids I was able to discover Stefan Sagmeister, James Victore, Paula Scher, David Carson, and Milton Glaser. He also featured the amazing design firm, Pentagram, twice.
Hillman had this distinctive minimalist feel in his videos. His works were simple, serene, and astoundingly sophisticated. Hillman could successfully pack depth and wisdom in a span of five to ten minutes.
His last video provides a gentle closure to his amazing life and career.
Thank you, Hillman. Thanks for being awesome.
